Single mother Suze (Michaela Watkins) is dreading the day her teenage daughter Brooke goes off to university, but when she learns Brooke has been accepted to a school four hours away in Montreal, she's beside herself.  The only consolation for Suze is that Brooke is also leaving her boyfriend, Gage (Charlie Gillespie), whom Suze considers a loser. When Brooke, who rarely answers her mother's calls or texts, lets her know that Gage is in the hospital, she begs Suze to visit Gage.A Canadian production filmed in Hamilton, Ontario with a mostly Canadian cast and crew, including stars Aaron Ashmore, Sara Waisglass and Charlie Gillespie, and husband/wife co-directors Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart. What makes this film a rare gem, and worthy of Watkins's talents, is that it's consistently funny, doesn't reduce its leads to stereotypes or tropes and casts Suze as a woman we would actually want to hang out with rather than pity for going through a tough life stage. Suze is a funny, never-judge-a-book-by-its-cover dramedy, that succeeds because of its engaging lead performances and in the way it presents a platonic relationship based on mutual respect. Richard Crouse
