Ancaster Sewing Academy aims to provide affordable and fun sewing classes for the community, run by professional theatre seamstress and Costume Studes BA Jaida Lapsley. Beginner Sewing focuses on the basics of both hand and machine sewing, ensuring proper technique and neat stitches. Students will learn basic alteration skills such as hemming, taking in pants, sewing buttons, and patching holes. Intermediate Sewing reviews and then builds on these basics, teaching more advanced stitches and alteration techniques and delving into pattern adjustments. Both classes culminate in creating a finished product to take home. Classes are recommended for teens and adults, but open to all ages provided you feel you can keep up with the lessons. Each session is one hour in length, and this course runs for four weeks at the same time each Wednesday. Materials and machines are provided.
Fair warning: this experience defies easy description. Hearing ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ pairs acclaimed movement artist Trevor Copp of Tottering Biped Theatre with a piano soloist for an experience that’s part concert, part live experiment, and entirely unlike anything else we’ve had in Peller Hall. Movement by movement, Mussorgsky’s beloved Pictures at an Exhibition is performed and reimagined multiple ways: through sound alone, through story, through the body… inviting the audience to discover how differently the same music can be heard depending on how it’s framed. At the end, the audience votes on which approach worked best.
There’s an old saying about biography: It takes a life to study a life. Few people embody that better than Dr. Alan Walker: the Ancaster resident and McMaster University Professor Emeritus whose three-volume, twenty-five-year biography of Franz Liszt and recent extraordinary biography of Frederic Chopin are considered two of the most important works ever written about these great composers. In 2025, the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest awarded Walker an honorary doctorate, to add to his earlier award of the Hungarian Knights Cross of Merit in recognition of a lifetime spent uncovering the real stories of classical music’s most dazzling and misunderstood figures.
