Great Big Sea formed in St. John's, Newfoundland in the early 1990s and built something that hadn't quite existed before: traditional Newfoundland folk music, with its 500-year-old Irish, Scottish, and Cornish roots, played with the lift and energy of a rock band. There's a reason every Great Big Sea show felt like a kitchen party. You sang every word, clapped until your hands hurt, and walked out feeling like you'd made a dozen new friends. That's the music!
Off The Rock is North America's premier Great Big Sea tribute, featuring Anthony Clayton, Thom Danger Speck, Sean Battams, Steve Peckford, David Skolnick, and Aaron Spink. True fans of the music and band, they've embarked on two East Coast tours, played venues across Ontario, and rooms full of fans who've closed their eyes mid-show and sworn they were back in St. John's. Their set pulls from the full GBS catalogue - "Ordinary Day," "When I'm Up," "Mari-Mac," "Consequence Free," "Sea of No Cares" - alongside the East Coast traditional songs that fed the originals.
Great Big Sea spent three decades building something rare: Newfoundland folk music. 500-year-old songs with Irish, Scottish, and Cornish roots, played with the lift and energy of a rock band. "Up" went quadruple platinum in Canada! Eleven albums went gold. Between 1996 and 2016 they were the sixth-best-selling Canadian band in the country. The band retired, but the catalogue is too good to leave on a shelf. And honestly, there's no better night to bring it back than Canada Day.
The kitchen party is at Peller Hall. Come ready to sing.
Peller Hall is fully accessible, with parking behind Memorial and in nearby lots, and bar service on site. Two 60-minute sets with intermission. Tickets available online or at the box office: 905-304-3232.
